After a long and very emotional day for the Summerland Steam, they came out firing on all cylinders against the Princeton Posse, picking up a 5-1 victory in the Similkameen Valley tonight. The Steam left Summerland early today in order to attend a memorial service for their friend and teammate, Alex Fraser. Understandably so, one had to wonder if they would be emotionally checked into the hockey game tonight. They took a little while to get into a rhythm, but once they got dialed in they began to show just how tight-knit they've become as a team while dealing with adversity. Brett Huber got the start for the Steam, and made 33 saves on 34 Posse shots to pick up the win.
Led by their captain, Daylan Robertson, once again the Steam were able to open the scoring on the powerplay and get an early lead on the Posse. They would take the lead into the second period before Princeton's Dalton Dubetz tied the game. Just under 2 minutes later, Dylan Burton restored the lead for Summerland, and after that the Steam didn't look back.
They turned the heat up on the Posse in the middle of the hockey game and into the third period. Josh Dacosta added another powerplay goal with 1:46 to go in the second before Daylan Robertson added his second of the night halfway through the third. Reid Brown made the score 5-1 at the 8:59 mark of the third to round out the scoring.
It was a big win for the Steam, as they narrowed their chase of the Kelowna Chiefs to just a single point after the Chiefs took a 4-2 loss to the Osoyoos Coyotes on Saturday night. The Steam carry 1 game in hand on the Chiefs, which they will use tomorrow on 'FAN APPRECIATION DAY' at the Summerland Arena in a matinee against the North Okanagan Knights at 2PM.
The Steam play the Knights for the final time this season tomorrow, looking to win the season series and take sole possession of first place in the Okanagan Division by obtaining 2 points. Darren Hogg will get the start for Summerland after a solid performance by him against Kelowna and an equally solid effort by his partner Brett Huber on Saturday night in Princeton.
